Diocesan Commission for Justice and Peace calls for urgent creation of infrastructure to protect country from heavy rains

Praia, Jan 15 (Inforpress) – The Diocesan Commission for Justice and Peace (CDJP) has issued an urgent appeal to authorities and civil society for the creation of adequate infrastructure to protect the country from severe damage that may be caused by storms and heavy rainfall.

The appeal follows climate phenomena recorded in 2025 and a significant increase in extreme weather events observed in recent years, particularly heavy rains causing flooding, destruction of property, economic losses, loss of life and human suffering.

Concerned about this situation, the Diocesan Commission for Justice and Peace of the Diocese of Santiago, through a statement, urged central and municipal authorities, as well as civil society, to unite in creating adequate infrastructure to protect Cabo Verde’s urban centres.

“The heavy and prolonged rains that fell in August and November 2025, with tragic consequences already known, once again exposed the vulnerability of our cities,” the statement recalled, stressing that extreme climate events are likely to become increasingly frequent.
