Government highlights INPS as a ‘robust instrument’ to fight inequality

Praia, Jul 15 (Inforpress) - Today, the Minister Fernando Elísio Freire stressed that the National Social Security System has evolved from a basic protection mechanism to a ‘robust instrument for combating inequality, discrimination and exclusion’.

The head of the Family, Inclusion and Social Development portfolios was speaking at the opening of the conference marking National Social Security Day, under the slogan ‘Social Protection in 50 years of Independence - Achievements and Challenges’, held this morning in the city of Praia.

According to the minister, Cabo Verde has become a pioneer, along with its Portuguese counterpart, in the United Nations' global acceleration on labour and social protection.

With a ‘robust and supportive system that spans several generations’ and ‘covers all social strata’, he said that the INPS has played ‘a crucial role’, guaranteeing ‘decent pensions’ to support families in times of vulnerability, ‘protecting the elderly and supporting the sick’ who have contributed to the country's development throughout their lives.
