Fogo: Cheese Festival aims to revive the "buli" tradition as an alternative to the ban on plastic use

São Filipe, July 14 (Inforpress) – The fourth edition of the Cheese Festival, organized by the Ka Djidja Association, has as a novelty the introduction of the “biggest buli de leti” competition as a way to revive its use as an alternative to plastic.

The president of the Ka Djidja association, Pedro Matos, said that with the introduction of the "biggest buli di leti" (biggest milk gourd, in Portuguese) competition, he aims to revive the "buli" as an alternative to plastic, but also as a source of sustainable income for families.

"One of the new features of this year's edition is the revival of the 'buli', the traditional gourd, as a cultural symbol and ecological solution," said Pedro Matos, who added that with the ban on the import, production and sale of plastics since 2023, the use of alternative materials, such as sisal and the gourd itself, constitute natural substitutes because they are biodegradable and culturally relevant.

Sisal comes in many forms and can be transformed into baskets, ropes, bags, and the gourd replaces plastic “sustainably and organically very well” because it is biodegradable and can generate income for rural communities affected by climate change. Its cultivation even uses wastewater, which makes it “even more valuable.”
