Praia, 8 September (Inforpress) – Cape Verdean athlete Tatiana Mendes set a new African record in freediving in the Variable Weight (VWT) discipline in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, reaching a depth of 81 metres.

The achievement, announced by the athlete herself on her Facebook page, makes Tatiana Mendes the first African and Cape Verdean woman to set a continental record in VWT without the use of underwater breathing equipment.

In "freediving," or apnea diving, the athlete descends and ascends underwater without breathing, after inhaling at the surface.

In the Variable Weight discipline, the athlete uses a weight system that assists in descending to the desired depth, subsequently abandoning it to ascend independently.
