Boa Vista: ‘Uncontrolled’ landfill on the island prompts consultant to propose the Fukuoka Method

Sal-Rei, August 11 (Inforpress) – The Boa Vista landfill, located in Ribeira do Rabil, operates as an “uncontrolled” dumpsite and, given the critical environmental situation, consultant Morto Fandé has proposed the urgent adoption of the Fukuoka Method for the restructuring of the site.

The diagnosis was presented during the workshop to validate the waste flow on the island, framed within the Joint Program for Promoting Public-Private Partnerships to Boost the Circular Economy on Boa Vista Island, a United Nations initiative funded by the Joint SDG Fund, using the Waste Wise Cities Tool (WaCT) from UN-Habitat.

The study confirms that the landfill site, covering approximately seven hectares, lacks a waterproofing base, a perimeter drainage system, and mechanisms for containing and treating leachate, the liquid generated by the decomposition of waste.

In addition to the lack of infrastructure, the landfill is situated on the riverbed of the Ribeira do Rabil, one of the country’s largest river basins; this situation threatens the quality of the soil and groundwater and requires plans to be drawn up for its future capping and relocation.
