Fogo: Health Minister admits plans to create facilities for the hospitalisation of psychiatric patients

São Filipe, 12 August (Inforpress) – The Minister of Health, Lúcio Fernandes, today acknowledged the possibility of creating or adapting a space for the inpatient care of psychiatric patients at the São Francisco de Assis Regional Hospital.

Both during the meeting with the São Filipe municipal team and with the management of the São Francisco de Assis Regional Hospital, the issue of people with mental health conditions was raised as a cause for concern, as was the need to strengthen the response in the area of mental health.

The minister explained that the hospital’s role is to ensure treatment for patients in the acute or decompensated phase of a psychiatric illness, but acknowledged the need to find solutions for patients once they have stabilised and cannot be cared for by their own families.

“We need to return patients to their families and to society,” said Lúcio Fernandes, emphasising, however, that there are families who are unable to take in and support their relatives with mental health problems.
