UCID questions the President of the Republic’s criteria and the timing of the constitutional review request

Mindelo, August 12 (Inforpress) – The UCID party today questioned the criteria used by the President of the Republic in submitting to the Constitutional Court one of the eight issues raised in the petition related to the arrest of Amadeu Oliveira and the timing of the initiative, five years after the events.

At a press conference, the president of the Independent and Democratic Cape Verdean Union (UCID, opposition), João Santos Luís, welcomed the initiative of the approximately 550 citizens who brought the issues before the President of the Republic, as well as the President’s decision to request a constitutional review by the Constitutional Court

However, João Santos Luís said that his concerns relate to the decision to select only one of the eight issues raised in the petition and to the timing of the request.

“On what basis was one selected and the other seven excluded?” he asked, while acknowledging that the President of the Republic has the authority to determine the subject matter of the request submitted to the Constitutional Court.
