Football: Cabo Verde chosen to relaunch the Amílcar Cabral Cup, which returns to the UFOA calendar

Praia, July 16 (Inforpress) - Cabo Verde has been chosen by the General Assembly of the Union of West African Football Associations (UFOA) to host the relaunch of the Amílcar Cabral Cup in football, which will take place in August, after more than two decades of absence.

The announcement was made by the director of this organization, in statements to the press after a meeting with the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, at the Presidential Palace in Praia.

Mapate Gaye explained that the choice of Cabo Verde to mark the return of the race is linked to the very origins of the competition, which was inspired by the historical figure of Amílcar Cabral, leader of the liberation struggle in Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde.

The first edition of the Amílcar Cabral Cup was organized in Guinea-Bissau in 1979, and the decision to relaunch the competition in Cabo Verde aims, according to Mapate Gaye, to symbolize the historical link between the two countries and to honor the legacy of the founder of the Guinean and Cape Verdean nationalities.
