The National Institute of Public Health wants an integrated approach to combat chemical contaminants in food

Praia, July 8 (Inforpress) - Food safety is an "essential component" of public health, and the risks associated with chemical contaminants in food require an increasingly integrated approach, declared the president of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP).

"Public health goes beyond infectious diseases. It is also necessary to consider the population's exposure to chemical contaminants, waste, pesticides, and other toxic substances that pose health risks," stated Maria da Luz Lima.

She was speaking to the press moments before the start of the specialist training course on the assessment of toxicological risks and contaminants, designed to strengthen the technical skills of professionals involved in food safety and the protection of public health, which is taking place over two days at the institution’s headquarters in the city of Praia.

Maria da Luz Lima explained that the training aims to equip professionals and institutions with the skills to assess the risks associated with the presence of contaminants throughout the food chain, including fishery products, which may also pose risks to consumers, with a view to helping to strengthen surveillance systems, food safety and the protection of public health.
