Praia, 23 June (Inforpress) – The president of the Olympic Academy, Orlando Mascarenhas, said today that World Olympic Sports Day is a date of great symbolic significance for Cabo Verde, highlighting the role of the Olympic movement in the education of young people and the development of society.

Speaking to Inforpress as part of the celebrations for World Olympic Sports Day, which is observed today, 23 June, Orlando Mascarenhas recalled that the date marks the decision taken in Paris in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin to revive the Olympic Games.

As he explained, Coubertin revived the Olympic Games in a modernised form, linking them not only to sport but also to youth, education and volunteering.

For Mr Mascarenhas, the Olympic spirit is a philosophy of life that uses sport as a vehicle for transmitting educational, peaceful, humanistic, cultural and ecological values, taking on particular importance in a context where Cabo Verde continues to face challenges in the education and holistic development of young people.
