Praia, 23 June (Inforpress) – Cabo Verde aims to become a leader in the field of biotechnology through the preservation of unique microorganisms, but local researchers warn that they face significant barriers due to a lack of financial resources and specialised equipment.

The warning was issued by Neidy Rodrigues, a researcher and lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Cabo Verde (Uni-CV), during a seminar entitled “From microbial diversity to scientific sovereignty”, which is taking place in the city of Praia.

The event, which began today at the Palmarejo Grande Campus, focused on the “invisible world” of bacteria, fungi and parasites, and served to highlight the need for the country to invest urgently in the sector in order to protect its biological and economic heritage.

“With its strategic geographical location, Cabo Verde has ideal conditions for the growth of a unique microbial biodiversity that remains unexplored,” the researcher told the press, arguing that the country should not limit itself “to the role of a mere supplier of samples to other countries”.
