Mindelo, June 3 (Inforpress) – The president of the UCID party today expressed to the President of the Republic his concern about the nomination of Francisco Carvalho as prime minister, arguing that "the position is incompatible with any criminal suspicions against him."
João Santos Luís, president of the Cape Verdean Union for Independence and Democracy (UCID), spoke to the press after an online meeting with the Head of State, José Maria Neves, as part of consultations for the appointment of the new Prime Minister following the legislative elections of May 17.
According to the leader of the UCID party, the responsibility for the eventual appointment of Francisco Carvalho will fall to the President of the Republic, given that the former mayor is the subject of a process involving suspicions related to his performance of duties at the City Council of Praia.
“We cannot have a prime minister who is suspected of crimes committed whilst in office,” declared João Santos Luís, emphasising, however, that there has so far been no conviction or formal charge against Francisco Carvalho.
