Praia, June 3 (Inforpress) – The Labour and Solidarity Party (PTS) today warned of the “urgent need for in-depth reflection” on Cabo Verde’s existing structural response capacity to emergencies and natural disasters.

Speaking at a press conference in Praia, PTS president Jónica Brito said she was following with “deep concern” developments related to the fire that occurred in Ponta Belém, Praia, which destroyed goods and merchandise belonging to dozens of informal traders.

In her statement, she expressed solidarity with those affected and conveyed her appreciation to firefighters and the competent authorities who provided support during rescue operations, as well as to citizens who mobilised to help combat the blaze.

While acknowledging the efforts of the authorities, Jónica Brito questioned the country’s logistical and human preparedness for simultaneous or larger-scale emergencies, highlighting structural vulnerabilities in the face of recurring fires and disasters.
