Praia, 29 May (Inforpress) – The chair of the National Electoral Commission (CNE) stated today that “all the conditions are in place” for the formation of the new government and for the new members of parliament to take up their posts, following the publication of the final results of the general election.
According to Maria do Rosário Gonçalves, following the publication of the results in the Official Gazette, the President of the Republic may now begin consultations with the political parties that took part in the election and, “in principle”, invite the winning party, the African Party for the Independence of Cabo Verde (PAICV), to form a government.
She also explained that, within 20 days of the results being published, the National Assembly may convene in its own right to hold its first session, marking the start of the new parliamentary term and the swearing-in of the 72 elected members of parliament.
“We believe that all the conditions are now in place for the new members of parliament to take up their posts and for the new Government of the Republic to be sworn in for a five-year term,” she said.
