Praia, Mar 24 (Inforpress) – The direction of AJOC requested on Monday to the Regulatory Authority for Social Communication (ARC) a position “as a matter of urgency” in relation to the Government statement on “attempt to control” media announced Sunday in a statement.
The Journalist Association of Cabo Verde (AJOC) considers that, by threatening with “legal responsibility” the media that “publish untrue information in this moment of contingency…”, the Government blames them for the dissemination of fake news.
“It is a slight accusation and without any adherence to reality and has no other intention than to silence the media and to condition the work of journalists. AJOC recalls that the limits to freedom of the press are duly indicated in the Constitution of the Republic and in the Law on Media,” reads the statement.
For this reason, “it considers absolutely disproportionate the Government’s decision to criminalize the media that, eventually, has passed on some information not endorsed by the aforementioned “official sources”, giving it the “truth” stamp.
