2,000-Escudo Banknote Featuring Cesária Évora Named Africa’s Best Banknote of 2026

Praia, Sept. 2 (Inforpress) — The 2,000-escudo banknote issued by the Bank of Cape Verde (BCV) in 2024 in honor of singer Cesária Évora was named “Best African Banknote in Circulation of 2026” in an international competition, the BCV announced.

“The 2,000-escudo banknote from Cabo Verde successfully passed both phases and achieved a score of 80.85 points, taking first place,” according to a statement from the BCV.

The banknote took first place among the banknotes from 42 African countries that participated in the competition, organized by IBNS Mosaic, a division of the International Bank Note Society (IBNS), which annually recognizes banknotes in circulation on the African continent. 

According to IBNS Regional Director Serhiy Trushyn, the “award highlights the design and cultural value of the banknote, as well as the way in which the Bank of Cabo Verde represents the country's history and identity through its currency.”
